Tourism Signage Special consideration for the Esplanade
Portishead has miles of sea front, and the part that most tourists like to visit is that which is next to the Lake Grounds and that faces Kilkenny Bay. It features a promenade that has been called the Esplanade since the 19th century, and the road passing nearby is also called The Esplanade. Portishead Chamber of Tourism fills that it should be referred to by its name, the Esplanade.
The word seafront has connotations that do not project the image or direction we wish our town to follow. Weston-super-Mare has a seafront noted for its shops and funfairs. Clevedon has one noted for its Victorian pier and tearooms. The appeal of both of those venues is different than that of the Esplanade, and in referring to the Esplanade by name, we mark Portishead as being distinct and different.
