In the 19th century, Bristol Docks were in heated competition with the Port of Liverpool to become the main seafaring link with America. Isambard Kingdom Brunel had a vision of linking London and New York with a steam railway and transatlantic steam ships. His plans would make Bristol a major centre of international commerce, and in pursuing his dreams he became the champion of the local area.

During his lifetime his first two steam ships made their maiden voyages along the Seven, passing before Portishead. The Royal Inn was built at the terminus of his planned railway, and after his death the railway was extended to Portishead and connected with a steamer pier built next to the Royal Inn.

The Royal Inn and steamer pier remain as popular landmarks to remind us of our connection with Brunel. Looking out over the Severn, the view of graceful arches of suspension cables on the new Severn Crossing Bridge remind us of his vision.

To commemorate this great man, local events for the year 2006 had a Brunel theme.
Brunel 200 is the bicentenary of the birth of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, being celebrated in Portishead, Portbury, Pill, North Somerset, Bristol Avon in South West England with Summer Carnivals, Concerts, Fireworks, Flower Shows, Parties, Picnics
